A Memorable Weekend

Can you believe our little girls are 6 months old??? I can...but then again, I can't! Time is funny that way. I don't remember much from life before babies (which could also just be from a lack of sleep :D) but at the same time, it feels like it was just a couple of weeks ago we were bringing them home from the hospital. They are changing so incredibly fast and it's almost like I don't even realize it unless I take the time to really think back to 6 months ago and just what those early days were like...
So both Amelia and Penelope seemed to go out of their way to make their 6 month birthday a weekend to remember. On Friday evening, we had Amelia on the floor doing a little "tummy time" and she figured out how to roll from her tummy to her back. She did it more than once and by about the 3rd time, she was quick to get her arm out of the way and go right into the roll. :) Penelope, not to be outdone by her sister, decided Saturday was her day to show off. I laid her down on her back in her crib, went to check on Amelia and when I turned back around, she was on her tummy! I missed it! I put her on her back for nap time and when I checked in on her about an hour later, she had rolled to her tummy again and was fast asleep. It was the same for Sunday's nap and I started to wonder just when would I get to see her roll over... But then it happened - she was on the floor, playing in her little "gym" and she did it for both Mommy and Daddy to see. :) Paul grabbed the camera and was able to catch her doing it a few more times. It's pretty amazing to watch both girls learn new skills and to see the look on their face when they discover they've done something new.
Over the last few weeks Amelia has really started to notice her feet and now likes to grab her toes to play (especially during diaper changes) so we've been watching Penelope more to see if she's found her feet and toes and yesterday, she didn't disappoint... When I was changing her diaper, I glanced up at her face and saw that she had not only found her foot but had proceeded to start sucking on her big toe. TOO CUTE!!
We've also been practicing with the cereal at least once a day and they both are getting better at keeping the food in their mouth. I think we'll be ready to try some veggies soon. And Amelia seems to be getting better and better with sleeping through the night ~ although she tends to wake up promptly between 6 and 6:30 every morning. Now if only I could teach her that weekends are for sleeping in... :)
More fun stuff I just remembered... Penelope is quickly discovering all the fun sounds she can make and her latest is a very high pitched squeak and squeal when she's really happy and excited. Amelia is trying out some new sounds as well, although right now, she prefers to keep her mouth closed, making more of an "mmm" sound and she's doing it when she's kinda cranky and fussing. We keep telling her she can open her mouth to talk to us but she prefers not to.... It's funny how one likes to "talk" when she's happy and having fun and the other wants to be heard more when she's upset about something. Clearly these 2 girls have very different personalities.
All in all, it was a pretty good weekend! And while I love to watch the girls accomplish new things, some of my favorite moments over the last couple of days have come when I've laid them down side by side and they both turn to look at each other and after a few seconds of studying the other's face, one baby will grin and that makes the other one grin back. It brings a smile to my face each and every time!
