Let's Eat! And Sleep!

It's been a few weeks and I thought I better update with our latest news... Amelia and Penelope got their first taste of solids this past weekend. And I use the term "solids" pretty loosely... Yep, you guessed it ~ we've started rice cereal! Both girls have been doing so well sitting up when supported and when we hold them on our laps while we eat, they have been either staring at our food or trying to grab it. :D We figured those were some pretty good signs that it's time for them to have something other than milk. Although once I mix the cereal with the recommended amount of milk, the consistentcy is so runny, I might as well be spoon feeding them straight milk. Pretty messy! It's only been a few days though so I suppose it'll take some more trial and error to get it the way both Mommy and babies like it. Both girls seem to like it well enough and it looks like it's not ALL getting spit back out. In fact, right from the start, they've acted like they know how it's supposed to work - opening their mouth as the spoon approaches and trying to "chew" it. Now if only Penelope wouldn't be so grabby, trying to take the spoon from my hand and if only Amelia wouldn't chew on her own hand between bites... Oh, and Amelia appears to dislike the high chair as much as the carrier (we think she doesn't like being strapped in anywhere) so that could be a bit of a hurdle when it's time for her to have more solid meals and fewer bottles and nursing sessions. Maybe once she realizes that the high chair leads to filling her tummy, she won't think it's so bad...
Paul managed to get some good pictures of them in their little chairs, enjoying those first bites so they will eventually be on SmugMug. I will post a couple here sooner if at possible. I'm sure the video captures the moment better though. :D
The other good news from our house is that Penelope is getting quite consistent at sleeping through the night, going to bed by about 8:3oish and waking sometime after 6ish (or even 7 on some Saturdays and Sundays). Now Amelia on the other hand - not so reliable... She had a little stretch last week - sleeping thru Wed, Thur, Fri and Sat nights (those were the first times since that wonderful night back on 4/2), but she only gets to about 5am before I have to either give her the pacifier or feed her. 5am is a little early for a weekend but would be OK if it was a work day. Too bad since starting this work week she's been up the last 2 nights... But hey ~ 4 nights in a row is great and she's got to start somwhere! Besides, if we didn't have Penelope showing us that some babies are better at sleeping and soothing themselves (gotta love the thumb!!) then we wouldn't have anything to compare her to and we'd be thrilled with those few nights. :)
We've got a pretty busy month coming up - 6 month pictures to take (hard to believe they are 6 months old already!), Mother's Day, a baptism to plan, Daddy's birthday week and Aunt Sarah and Uncle David's wedding. I really hope to stay more on top of my blog entries, but please forgive me if that doesn't happen. Some days all I can handle is work and taking care of the girls...
